Vision & Strategy, Popular Education

Steven Tatum

Steven Tatum is fascinated by the power stories have to shape and reshape the way people live. He spent a decade teaching high school English, first in his home state of Vermont, then in Hartford, Connecticut, which he now calls home. In his time teaching in the public school system, Steven led professional development initiatives about racial identity and revised curricula to reflect our multicultural world. In 2017, he was awarded the Human and Civil Rights Award by Vermont-NEA for his work organizing teachers, students, and parents around issues of identity in the classroom. He remains engaged in the public school system as an Executive Board member of the Hartford Federation of Teachers.

In his role as a worker-owner of The People’s Saturday School, Steven supports and co-creates education programs and workshops that use the joy of lifelong learning and peer support as a means of critical self reflection and empowerment.

Steven earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and a Master of Arts in Teaching Literature from Bard College, where he was also trained in collaborative pedagogy as a peer writing tutor.

In his personal life, Steven appreciates spending time outside in every season. He is a wonderer, writer, partner, housemate, brother, son, friend, bassoonist, listener, kayaker, and tea drinker.
